I wouldn’t have read this book if I used the rule about not reading a book if you aren’t interested in the first 50 pages. I had an ulterior motive – this book was being read for America’s Wild Read Book Discussion, but, as usual, I was too late. The discussion closed a week or 2 before I got around to checking on it. I didn’t apply the rule, kept reading the book, and started enjoying it when I got to the part about the ants, the second part of the book. The parts about people never seemed quite real to me. The protagonist was preternaturally perfect. The ants weren’t.
