Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science - Atul Gawande Complications is a book that goes into uncomfortable questions how doctors deal with fallibility, mystery, and uncertainty, which are the section headings for this book. Doctors have to begin practicing and they have to get experience, but no one wants a new doctor to practice on them or their family. Gawande talks about how new doctors acquire experience, what happens when doctors make mistakes, as all people do, the role of Morbidity and Mortality Conferences in preventing future mistakes, how the profession of anesthesiology undertook the first in-depth scientific look at errors in medicine and came up with procedures that dropped the death rate from anesthesia to less than a twentieth of what it was, what happens when doctors become bad, the history of autopsies, and the role of the patient and the doctor in making medical decisions.
